Azores 1
Do you have a cache of notions in a mason jar marked that sounds interesting, safely reserved for that maybe, hopefully someday.
This came out of one of those jars.
On June 18 and 19th, 1974 President Nixon met with Portuguese President Spinola at Lajes Field a United States airbase on the island of Terceira in the Azores.
Their meeting was really of little interest to me (maybe it should’ve been ) but the Azores, the nine island archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic now that sounded interesting so that note went into my mason jar for that some day .
I cashed that Chit, in 2016 and 2018 when I went to the Azores.
I’ve been a traveler for a long time, every trip unique in its own way, but as you know every trip has a little sour wine along the way.
I’m not whining, just real life.
But never once did that happen in the Azores
With the horizon of the ocean, always in the site line, it seemed that the land was like an afterthought. A rugged and exotic one.
In 2016 I went to three islands Sao Miguel Sao Jorge and Pico
In 2018 back to Sao Miguel, Flores and Corvo
All in their own way, doing their part just to define that big word; Paradise
I never thought I would thank Richard Nixon for anything, but for the Azores thank you, Mr. President
